James Blood Ulmer is the last man standing for the blues. Although he was on the genesis of free funk, a movement associated with the musical philosophy of ‘harmolodics’, side by side with Ornette Coleman, Ulmer traces his deepest roots to the blues, music that’s his birthright, which his most recent eponymous solo record can testify to. More than his great guitar playing and moaning voice it’s his gigantic presence that evokes this rare feeling of being so close to the roots of American music.
