Carate Urio Orchestra, 2. 7.

The first gig of the festival’s second day, 2 July, was the Linhart Hall appearance by Carate Urio Orchestra, one of those ensembles whose booming voice is delivered with certain muteness. Under un overarching umbrella of improvised, gently floating sound, the band produced a diversity of musical currents, engaging in both post-rock pathos and symphonic kitsch, and coalescing idioms of historical jazz and smooth nuances of indie-folk; one could even taste the flavours of pop songs. However, out of all these materials the band dexterously weaved a collective interplay that was all but saturated, prudent in its diversity and unusually forceful in its prudency.

Check out the band’s sound on the live album (Ljubljana Jazz Series) to be released next year under the Clean Feed label.
