Out of this year’s Festival’s concerts, it is the Carlos Bica AZUL that can be most formally designated as jazz. An uncontrived jazz generating enormously appealing melodies with the added bonus of a drummer the likes of Jim Black, bursting with ideas, humour and almost childlike enthusiasm about rhythm – the patterning of musical sound that is relentlessly crafty – yet provides reliable support. A committed, routinely forceful gig.
