Flat Earth Society, 1.7.

On a magnificently sultry afternoon, Flat Earth Society, a Flemish line up of seriously rollicking jazzmen, opened the Ljubljana Jazz Festival, which sped down the incredibly variegated musical roller coaster with this consistently inconsistent orchestra – as the band are keen on calling themselves. At a certain point, a New Orleans street orchestra suddenly wandered into the psychedelic 1970s, contemplating idioms and possible complementarities, and then proficiently entering a 1940s gala concert. Ballad-like, even sentimental and, the very next second, several decades or realities away. Yes, they even played klezmer. Who doesn’t? After all, it’s a rock’n’roll gig.

Or maybe not?

No worries, Frank Zappa is gone anyhow.
