At the 29th Liffe, Pionirski dom Youth Culture Centre organised two children’s workshops, a film workshop conducted by Sandi Skok and an animated film workshop presented by Andreja Goetz and Lene Lekše, the first one on Tuesday, 6 November, and the second one on 10 and 11 November, in Cankarjev dom’s E2 Hall. The first workshop covered the making of a film trailer, a selected group of scenes that are shown to advertise a movie. On Wednesday, attendees tried their hand at writing a script, which the trailer would advertise. The animated film workshop focused on different aspects of animation, ways of animating creatures, objects, matter and spaces (such as fire, birds or a forest).
On Saturday, each attendee brought a friend, and the two groups focused on making a short animated film and a trailer. Andreja Goetz and Lena Lekše imaginatively imitated water with transparent gel on a blue background; using stop-motion animation – a technique in which objects are physically manipulated in small increments between individually photographed frames so that they will appear to exhibit independent motion when the series of frames is played back as a fast sequence – because real water is difficult to control due to its inconsistency. On Sunday, the attendees shot a one-minute animated video about a lumberjack chopping wood. The film workshop’s trailer advertised the animated film workshop. Filling in the Sound (featuring the lines) and Video (outline of takes) sections according to the timeline, the children learnt the technical rudiments of documentary filmmaking, e.g. how the crew must respond to one-off events that must be shot from two different perspectives, resulting in a one-minute trailer.
