African Breeze Sweeping through Riveting Jazz

Joachim Kühn, piano; Majid Bekkas, vocals, guimbri, oud; Ramon Lopez, drums, tabla, percussion

Turning 70 this year, Joachim is appearing with his current project, a phenomenal world music/jazz trio with Majiid Bekkas from Morocco and Ramon Lopez from Spain. Developing his own voice since the mid 1960's, Joachim is one of Europe’s seminal pianists, exploring jazz idiom with a classical accent and making great use of the wide paths opened up by Ornette Coleman in the sixties. Joachim Kühn's playing is totally unique and there's no better way to feel this than to attend his concert.

“The African influence is not used as a gimmick. Instead, it creates new possibilities and helps to frame the pianist's use of various jazz idioms. Moreover, relentless percussion line and the call-and-response singing and chanting are bewitching. Kühn, 70, shows no sign of slowing down; the vitality he demonstrates makes Voodoo Sense a high point in an already illustrious career.”  Downbeat 2014
