Tarek Yamani Trio

Lebanon, Slovenia

Unrelenting Arabic Jazz

Tarek Yamani, piano; Goran Krmac, tuba; Kristijan Krajnčan, drums

Lebanese pianist Tarek Yamani is a self-taught musician who fell under the spell of jazz at the age of 19. In 2010, Tarek won the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competition with an original composition. He has developed a personal composition and playing style, called Afro Tarab, which embodies Arabic rhythms and modes coupled with the complex African American sounds of jazz. His trio, which in 2012 released its debut album, Ashur, features two widely acclaimed Slovenian musicians. Proceeding from a rhythmically and melodically intricate musical context, the inspired threesome weaves a net of sonic associations, from fragments of Coltrane and bebop through an almost orchestrated sound to dispersed Arabic and jazz improvisations.

“He plays with cognitive flair, opening a melody in a vibrant pool of rich harmonic ideas and never shies from being adventurous.” (Jerry D'Souza, All About Jazz)
