Youthful yet Proficient Eclecticism
Marko Črnčec, piano & Fender Rhodes; Mark Shim, tenor saxophone & electric midi controller; Chris Jennings, double bass; ; Ludwig Afonso, drums
The Ljubljana Jazz Festival is presenting one of Slovenia’s most fruitful jazz musicians, pianist Marko Črnčec, in two line-ups: as member of Jani Moder’s ensemble and as leader of his own quartet. The foursome is composed of illustrious American, Canadian and Cuban artists; the Quartet’s Devotion, the pianist’s third album of original music, was released by the British label Whirlwind Recordings, led by an American bassist, Michael Janisch. Taking cue from notable fusion artists (Bitches Brew by Miles Davis, Headhunters by Herbie Hancock; bands Weather Report and Return to Forever), Črnčec’s Devotion playfully combines and bends genres and influences, drawing from soul and hip hop to flamenco, and ranging from introspective ballads to solid swing.
“It is said that Marko Črnčec has magic touch; indeed, his playing can be electric, in the manner of Herbie Hancock, or intimate, as if Keith Jarrett were the one at the keyboard.” (obala.net)
