The Necks
Australia
Maximal Minimalism
Chris Abrahams, piano; Tony Buck, drums; Lloyd Swanton, double bass
One of Australia’s cult bands, The Necks was formed over a quarter of a century ago. Enjoying a special status in the realm of jazz and music at large, the Trio’s idiosyncrasies are that they rarely rehearse and, instead, indulge in lengthy, one-hour pieces (on albums or in concerts), which slowly unravel in the most mesmerising fashion through reiterated phrases and sonic overflows, imperceptibly building up into an atmospheric polyphony with interspersed outbursts and surges, and ultimately finding their way back to the point of departure. Not entirely minimalist, nor ambient, nor trance jazz, the music of The Necks is possibly unique in the world today. When the trio plays time folds in upon itself and acquires an entirely new dimension.
“At times it feels as if nothing, literally nothing, is happening. But it is, constantly... Open is magical, calming, intriguing, beautiful. It makes me smile to listen to it.” (The Quietus)
