Gianluca Petrella & Giovanni Guidi Duo »Soupstar«
Italy
The Appeal of Fragmented Sound
Gianluca Petrella, trombone; Giovanni Guidi, piano
It is high time Slovenian jazz enthusiasts experienced a live performance by one of the foremost Italian jazzmen, trombone player Gianluca Petrella, noted for his fruitful cooperation with the legendary musician Enrico Rava (Rava’s Quintet also features pianist Guidi) and refined original music. Petrella has worked with many illustrious contemporary jazz musicians, including Lester Bowie, Hamid Drake and Sun Ra Arkestra as well as leading exponents of electronica (Matmos). This (ostensible) duality is also implicit in the featured duo, which makes good use of expansive methods of composition and startling electronic effects, at the same time paying tribute to Ellington as well as South African jazz. A prize specimen of cosmopolitan jazz.
“Guidi splashed and crashed across the full width of the keyboard, and Petrella blasted and squealed, and it all became music.” (Thomas Conrad, JazzTimes)
