Kjartan Ragnarsson, 19. 11. 2014

After yesterday’s screening of Icelandic Of Horses and Men the Kinodvor audiences were introduced to actor Kjartan Ragnarsson, a versatile performer; apart from being engaged in drama and music, Kjartan is also a prolific director who among others trained also with Benedikt Erlingsson, the maker of Of Horses and Men. In conversation with Jedrt Jež Furlan the actor confessed that it was an astounding experience to work with horses. He again stressed very strongly that no horses were injured or hurt during the shooting despite some violent scenes. Apart from incorporating the ideal ingredients for a drama (love, sex, killing, alcohol, etc.) the film is also characterised by wry, sardonic humour that is, according to Ragnarsson, deeply embedded within Icelandic culture – he is convinced that in the adverse climatic conditions it has been preserved especially owing to the Icelandic obstinacy and sarcasm.

Ragnarsson also emphasised the problematic attachment of horse owners to their animals, because of which the number of horses in Island has currently reached the towering number of 180,000, and is not stopping there. In an interview, Erlingsson stated that horses were good learners and responded well to the reactions of other horses; therefore, the director placed another horse behind the camera in order to direct the one before it better. The actor added that horse communication techniques had developed a great deal – there used to be a lot of roughness and constraint in horse training, while lately the breeding instils in a horse the feeling that it wants to do the things that are expected of him. We mustn’t reveal much more lest we should spoil the enjoyment of the viewers who still want to see the film tomorrow at 15.00 in CD’s Linhart Hall, let’s just mention that particular scenes (or stories) are based on real-life events, and some on Icelandic folk tales.
