Portico Quartet

Great Britain

Emilia Mårtensson, vocals; Kit Downes, piano; Lucy Railton, cello

Formed in 2005, the band’s genre-bending elusiveness makes it impossible to pin down, sending out echoes of electronica, jazz, minimalism, ambient and film music… Portico Quartet has unleashed a new wave of British jazz (Gogo Penguin, Cinematic Orchestra), an upsurge of young British bands that also appeal to Slovenian audiences. The Quartet’s debut album, Knee-Deep in the North Sea (2007), was nominated for the coveted Mercury Prize (presented by the British Phonographic Industry), and was Time Out magazine’s “Jazz, Folk and World Music” Album of the Year. To be featured at the JFL, their 2017 album, Art in the Age of Automation, received glowing reviews in All About Jazz, Blues & Soul, London Evening Standard, Mojo and Uncut. Untitled (AITAOA #2), Portico’s mini-album, came out in April.
